Danish dining chairs by Arne Vodder - the story
Made in Denmark, exported to New Zealand and re-found in the historic town of St Albans in the UK.
the era
Mid 1950s. Beautiful designed knock-down chairs for a post-war world on the move.
Danish furniture design at its best
Cute design touches include the gently curved, floating seats, the playful, highly distinctive swollen “bone-head” supports and exposed ply trim on the back rests.
clever construction and classic Vodder curves
Vodder designed these chairs with a pivoting back-rests mounted on elegant solid brass pins, allowing them to remain in the optimum position for comfort.
beautifully simple Danish craftsmanship
Finely constructed, each chair is designed to be ‘knocked down’ then re-assembled with ease. The trademark France and Son high-quality production values and materials are evident throughout the construction and design. Knock-down furniture was an ingenious design response to the needs of a highly transient post-war world. In their knocked-down condition these Danish chairs would have occupied less than a quarter of their normal volume.
condition details
In great condition, the teak frames have been stripped and re-polished, to contrast with the newly upholstered caramel-tan leather seats. The curved rattan backrests are all original, with very, very tiny sections of cane replacement (invisible unless peering up close.) You'll find the black "fd" marque on the underside of each chair.
These Arne Vodder Chairs for France and Son are highly collectable and will bring classic design elegance to any Mid Century Modernist inspired interior. Rare, collectable and and an ideal investment piece.
